Once again this past week we’ve been busy scanning across the internet to find the latest information and Open University courses. On the agenda this week we have: the OU’s part in the Milton Keynes city project, a new business idea from an OU student and a bad experience for OU student Ibrahim. Remember, if there’s a free course or bit of news on the agenda then hopefully we will pick it up and stick it on the next Open University news.
The Milton Keynes smart city project. The initiative is being led by distance learning pioneers, The Open University, and aims to collect data from around the city to make it more sustainable. It will analyse data on water, energy and transport use around the town. The project is hosted at the Open University’s main campus in Milton Keynes, and backed by a fail over site elsewhere in the town for disaster recovery purposes, says Julian Gilbert, a systems and network administrator at the Open University.

A bold and business-savvy law student has broken away from the ‘skint student’ stereotype to launch his own “firm” – despite being unqualified as of yet – after a “nightmare” experience involving an insurance company. David Wade, 29, who is currently studying the bachelor of law (honours) course with the Open University, launched David T. Wade, Student of Law with the aim to provide “a valuable service” to people and small businesses that cannot get legal aid or afford high street solicitor costs.

University student Ibrahim Mohamed Ismail, 42, was asked to disembark moments after boarding the Bristol to London Victoria coach with three rucksacks. According to one passenger, a group of women sitting at the front of the coach had been “making their feelings very obvious” and were “silent and staring at him.
