Once again this past week we’ve been busy scanning across the internet to find the latest information and Open University courses. This week we ask: can your friend be your therapist?, explore the world of Star Wars and more job cuts and subsequent action. So if there’s a free course or bit of news on the agenda then hopefully we will pick it up and stick it on the next Open University news.
BBC Radio 4’s All in the Mind Awards invites listeners who have experienced mental health problems to nominate individuals or groups who have played a special role in their recovery. One category for nominations is friends and family members, whilst other categories include those in paid and professional roles. So what is the difference between the support that a friend or a professional can give? This article looks at some the differences that exist between the roles of someone providing talking therapies, such as might be accessed through IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Treatment), and the informal support provided by friends and relations.

A second one-day walkout over plans to close the regional Open University (OU) centre in Leeds will take place tomorrow. Members of the University and College Union (UCU) are striking following the university’s plans to close seven regional centres in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Gateshead, Leeds, London and Oxford.
