Once again this past week we’ve been busy scanning across the internet to find the latest information and Open University courses. This week we meet a student defying expectations, Sixth Form pupils going the OU route and support for centre job cuts from politicians. Remember, if there’s a free course or bit of news on the agenda then hopefully we will pick it up and stick it on the next Open University news.
MORE than 1,000 sixth year pupils in Scotland are currently studying for degree level modules after the number of students registered with an Open University scheme rocketed by 45 per cent in a year.

A Romford student who suffers from absence seizures and Asperger Syndrome is looking to defy expectations and achieve his goal of working in advocacy with autistic young people. Alexander Rowley, 23, is now studying for a Masters Degree in Applied Linguistics with the Open University, having graduated from the institution in September with his Certificate of Education.

Politicians in Newcastle are preparing a show of solidarity with their Gateshead neighbours over proposals to close an Open University office with the loss of 61 jobs. Staff at the Gateshead office of the Open University have taken strike action twice over the proposals to shut the centre, which are part of plans to close seven regional facilities affecting 500 workers across the country.
Move of jobs from the region to the Midlands branded a ‘retrograde step’
