It’s that time of the week again when we grab a huge pile of online newspapers and trawl through for related articles until the digital ink is stained across our fingertips! Really? In the words of Dr Evil – no, not really, but we do have a few items that may be of interest to you. Graduation ceremonies in Croke Park (ooh, fancy), the concept of “granny leave” (no idea either) and a heartwarming tale of Open University success. Dive in!
Open University graduates celebrate outstanding achievements at Croke Park. Nearly 200 Open University students from across Ireland received their degrees on Friday 10th April 2015 at a ceremony in the iconic surroundings of Croke Park, Dublin, graduating with everything from BSc to MBA and MSc in Technology Management.

“Granny Leave”: Gendering childcare assumptions across the lifespan? from the Open University Business School. Back to the election (hard to escape from) and a look at an age at work related announcement from Labour (reported here in the Daily Mail) that they would introduce a new legal right to ‘granny leave’. This would allow working grandparents to take time off – up to four unpaid weeks per year – to help care for their grandchildren.

FEATURE: Stevenage woman Betty Game’s bounty for adult education – News – The Comet. When Betty Game was dying in hospital she looked back over her life and told her friend Margaret Ashby that graduating from university in her 50s was one of her happiest moments. Born in 1925, Betty lived in Stevenage her entire life and loved learning but was denied the chance to go to college and university after leaving school at 14. When she was in her 50s she gained a degree through the Open University.
