Once again this past week we’ve been busy scanning across the internet to find the latest information and Open University courses. This week we bring news of one of the most important UK maps ever made, an award for Beagle space team and a new approach to mental health from the Police force. Remember, if there’s a free course or bit of news on the agenda then hopefully we will pick it up and stick it on the next Open University news.
The first Geological map of the UK. One of the most important maps of the UK ever made – described as the ‘Magna Carta of geology’ – is to go on permanent public display in Cambridge after being restored to its former glory.

The 2015 Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Industry/Project Team was given to the combined Beagle 2 industrial and academic team. The team, who is popularly known to be the brains behind the Beagle 2 mission to Mars, received the distinction seven months after the confirmation of their spacecraft’s successful landing by the UK Space Agency. Beagle 2 was the first mission of UK to another planet. The mission was made possible through the collaboration of the University of Leicester, The Open University and Airbus Defence and Space.

The University of York has secured funding of £1 million to collaborate with North Yorkshire Police on new approaches to dealing with mental health problems. The Open University will be working with more than 10 partner forces to establish a national centre for policing research and professional development. This bid builds on work which started through an award from the College’s Building Capability Fund 2013.
